Zippo Butane Insert Compatibility: Which Lighters and Inserts Fit? | Case Check First

Zippo’s butane inserts fit regular-sized classic Zippo cases, but not Slim or 1935 Replica cases, and torch models list further Armor exclusions.

Zippo’s own wording is narrow: the inserts are built for “all regular-sized Zippo lighter cases,” not every Zippo ever made. Get the case family wrong and the insert rides too wide, sits proud of the lid, or won’t seat at all. Here’s which cases accept current inserts, what each model costs and produces, and how to fill and adjust one safely.

Which Zippo Cases Accept Butane Inserts?

Classic and regular-size cases accept the current inserts; Slim, 1935 Replica, and — for the torch models — Armor cases sit outside the published fit list.

Slim cases are narrower by design, so a standard-width insert cannot drop in. The 1935 Replica appears on the exclusion list for all three inserts: Yellow Flame, Single Torch, and Double Torch. Armor is murkier. Zippo’s current product pages exclude Armor compatibility for the Single Torch and Double Torch, and a support article adds a version-specific caveat — inserts dated J20–L22 may not fit Armor cases. Check the date code on the insert or buy the Yellow Flame, which carries no Armor exclusion on its listing.

The 1941 Replica and Vintage families are the gray zone. Zippo’s case-dimension table groups them at 0.5 inches wide, the same footprint as the models that fit, but Zippo’s published language says only “classic” or “regular-sized” — it never guarantees every historically styled case. Treat them as a maybe. Measure the inside of the case against the Double Torch insert’s listed dimensions of 0.5 inches wide, 2.1 inches high, and 1.4 inches deep before you commit.

Zippo Butane Insert Models Compared

Insert Model Flame And Ignition Price And Output
Yellow Flame Butane Insert Flint wheel; yellow flame up to 1,400°F/760°C $23.95; up to 125 five-second ignitions per fill; replaceable flint rated to 2,500 strikes
Single Torch Butane Insert Push-button piezo; adjustable blue torch up to 2,300°F/1,260°C $20.95; up to 100 five-second lights per fill; roughly 10,000 ignitions
Double Torch Butane Insert Push-button piezo; twin adjustable blue flames up to 2,300°F/1,260°C $23.95; up to 60 five-second ignitions per fill; roughly 10,000 ignitions; weighs 1.76 ounces
Case Fit (all three) Classic/regular-size cases only No Slim, no 1935 Replica; Armor excluded on both torch models

A yellow flame behaves like a traditional lighter — good for pipes and anything you’d rather not blast with concentrated heat — while both torch models hit the same 2,300°F ceiling and burn fuel faster as you add jets. How Do You Install And Fill A Butane Insert?

Swap the standard windproof insert for the butane unit, then fill it upside down for about six seconds and wait two minutes before sparking it.

  1. Pull the standard windproof insert from a compatible case and seat the butane insert in its place. All listed inserts ship unfilled.
  2. Turn the insert upside down so the fuel valve faces up, away from your face and body.
  3. Press a butane nozzle onto the filling valve and hold for roughly five to six seconds (Zippo’s guide specifies six).
  4. On a torch model, briefly press the fill valve once to bleed trapped air and butane, then refill another five to six seconds.
  5. Let the insert rest at least two minutes before ignition so the fuel settles.
  6. Set flame height with the insert upside down, using a flat-head screwdriver, dime, or paper clip on the adjustment screw. Turn toward plus for a taller flame, minus for shorter.

The most common failure is a weak or sputtering light after filling — that’s air in the valve, so repeat the bleed-and-refill step. The full procedure lives on Zippo’s butane lighter insert support page, and model details are on Zippo’s inserts comparison page.

Common Questions

Will a butane insert fit my Slim Zippo?

No. Zippo’s compatibility list excludes Slim cases from the Yellow Flame, Single Torch, and Double Torch inserts because Slim cases are narrower than Classic cases. The standard-width insert will not seat in the slimmer body.

Can I put a torch insert in an Armor Zippo?

Zippo’s current listings exclude Armor cases for both torch inserts. A Zippo support article notes that inserts dated J20 through L22 may not fit Armor cases. Check the date code before buying, or choose the Yellow Flame insert instead.

How long does one fill of butane last?

Zippo rates the Yellow Flame at up to 125 five-second ignitions per fill, the Single Torch at up to 100, and the Double Torch at up to 60.

Do the inserts come with a warranty?

Zippo lists a two-year warranty on all three inserts. Keep your proof of purchase, since coverage runs from the original purchase date.
