MDT LSS Gen3 Review: The Ultimate Modular Chassis System

The MDT LSS Gen3 chassis is an incredibly modular chassis, giving shooters the ability to swap out a buttstock, forend, and grip to whatever the shooter requires for a given scenario, all without losing the rifle’s zero! This is because the action never has to be removed from the Center Base. Everything else can be changed depending on what the user needs the rifle for.

MDT (Modular Driven Technologies) is well-known for making high quality precision chassis at an affordable price. These chassis are ready for a plethora of actions to be dropped in, fastened, and ready to shoot. MDT is also coming up with innovative designs year after year, pushing boundaries when it comes to building a precision rifle, or a superb hunting rifle setup. And just when we thought there couldn’t be anything else improved upon, MDT released the LSS Gen3 chassis.

Price

The LSS Gen3 chassis is such a unique chassis design that the price really depends on what you want. MDT has 3 Pre-Made Kits, which I’ll list the prices below in Canadian Dollars. Also keep in mind that the price of each kit can increase depending on the action (Short Action vs Long Action).

Each of these Kits come with the Center Base for your specific action, as well as the buttstock interface, buttstock, grip. The Competitor and The Tactical include a forend.

If you want to be creative, you can build your own kit as well.

First Impression

I got my hands on the LSS Gen3 with the Tactical setup, and when I opened the box I couldn’t help but smile. The chassis was absolutely solid!

Inside the box was also a pamphlet to explain how to setup the LSS Gen3, which is very handy, especially if this is your first chassis build.

Once I had the rifle setup completed, I couldn’t help but just stare at how epic the LSS Gen3 with the Tactical setup looked. My wife would agree with me that I may have spent too much time in the basement just holding it.

Barricade Stop

Something that isn’t new but still great to have is the barricade stop on the Center Base of the chassis. This is excellent for competition shoots when you need to press the rifle into an object before taking the shot.

Angled Pistol Grip Elite

Included with the LSS Gen3 Tactical Kit is the Pistol Grip Elite, which has a very nice rubber texture in the hand. It’s curved and designed in a way that it sits very nicely in the hand.

The LSS Gen3 chassis is compatible with AR-15 style pistol grips, but not with beaver tails.

SCS Buttstock

lss gen3

The LSS Gen3 Tactical Kit comes with a ridiculously customizable buttstock, the Skeleton Carbine Stock.

The SCS Buttstock has a toolless adjustable Length Of Pull, adjustable Rubber Buttpad, and adjustable cheekrest. Keep your allen wrench handy when at the range.

You can even completely remove the Rubber Buttpad assembly and flip the cheekrest for your lefty friends to try it out.

Something to mention is that when you select the Buttstock Interface, the MDT website will highlight which buttstocks will fit that Interface, so you know you’re getting the right buttstock for your build.

Interchangeable Forend

lss gen3

One of the innovative designs of the LSS Gen3 is that you can swap out the forend of the chassis depending on what scenario you need the rifle for.

You could be hunting on a Thursday with the Hunting Kit and have a shooting competition on Saturday and require a heavier setup. You now have the ability to swap out the forend, buttstock, and pistol grip to the setup you need in a few minutes and not lose your zero! This removes the necessity to go to the range and re-zero your rifle.

The other thing is that all you need for each of your actions is the Center Base, but only one of each forend and buttstock interfaces, and you can now use each different action in whichever setup you want, when previously if you wanted a tactical setup and competitor setup for each action, you needed to buy that chassis for each specific action.

For the sake of math, if you had 5 actions, and wanted a tactical and competitor setup for each of those 5 actions, you would need to have 10 separate chassis. But with the LSS Gen3, all you need to have is 5 Center Bases (one for each action) and only one Tactical forend and one Competitor forend!

10 chassis averaging $1000 = $10,000

5 Center Base averaging $700 = $3500
1 Tactical + 1 Competitor Forend = $270 + $340
Total $4110

That would be a savings of nearly $6000!

MDT ORYX Bipod

Attached on the forend I have an MDT ORYX Bipod which is their budget friendly option. It attaches using an MLOK system, can be folded, has adjustable legs, and a swivel lock to change the horizontal angle of the rifle for shooting on uneven surfaces.

Kodiak Defence Renova Action

The Action that I’m using for this setup is the Kodiak Defence Renova, which is a Remington 700 Clone.

Some of the key features of the Kodiak Defence Renova is that it has a spiral fluted bolt, SAKO extractor, and floating bolt head giving you the ability to fire a ton of different calibers.

The Kodiak Defence Renova action is incredibly smooth, it has fantastic ergonomics, and it’s made in Canada, too. So if you’re looking for a high-quality precision action for your next custom rifle build, check out the Kodiak Defence Renova below.

True North Arms Fake Suppressor

You may be wondering why it looks like I have a suppressor on this setup when I reside in Canada and suppressors are illegal in Canada. That’s because this is a Fake Suppressor made by True North Arms.

True North Arms makes a few different types of Fake Suppressors. These Fake Suppressors thread on the end of your barrel and include an O-ring which makes it easy to remove.

They’re available in 5/8-24 TPI and 1/2-28 TPI, depending on your barrel thread. One of the designs are called the Reverse Fake Can, which slide over top of your barrel, which can give your rifle that has an 18″ barrel appear to be a 12″ barrel with a can on the end.

Scorpion Optics Target Master

Another Canadian addition to this rifle is the Scorpion Optics 6-24×50 Target Master Wildcat which has an illuminated reticle feature and incredible clarity.

Scorpion Optics scopes are designed in Canada, and they offer a ton of affordable yet high quality optics. If you want a solid well-made and durable rifle scope without paying over $2000, then go check out Scorpion Optics.

JC Custom Barrel

The barrel I’m using for this rifle build was manufactured by JC Custom Barrels out of Bouctouche, NB, Canada.

It’s a heavy barrel at 26” and chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. JC’s barrels are single point cut rifles and hand lapped using 416R stainless steel rifling.

The process results in exceptionally uniform bore dimensions and consistent rifling twist rates—both critical for achieving optimal accuracy. The hand lapping produces a finely polished bore surface that reduces fouling, makes cleaning easier, and maintains accuracy even during prolonged shooting sessions.

The manufacturing begins with drilling the barrel blanks, followed by contouring them to their final shape. By completing all major machining before bore reaming and rifling, tighter tolerances can be achieved in the finished bore and groove dimensions. Finally, each barrel is meticulously hand-lapped and polished to ensure superior performance.

Trigger Tech

The final Canadian addition to this rifle build is the Remington 700 Diamond trigger made by Trigger Tech. This trigger is so nice and has an adjustable pull-weight from 4 ounces to up to 4 pounds.

When a friend of mine tried shooting this rifle, he said he would be buying the Remington 700 diamond trigger in the future for his Bergara B-14 rifle, which used the Remington 700 footprint.

Conclusion

The MDT LSS Gen3 chassis is the ultimate modular chassis system on the market today. Having the ability to swap out the forend, buttstock, and grips to whatever scenario you need the rifle for without losing your zero is phenomenal.

Right now I have the Tactical Kit for the Kodiak Defence Renova, but when the Hunting Kit is released I can now drop a few hundred bucks and have a completely different chassis setup for my rifle. There’s no need to go out and buy a different rifle or even a different chassis, which would run me close to $1500.

If you’re looking for an extremely modular chassis with over a million different combination possibilities, then go check out MDTTAC.com and get the LSS Gen3.
